Hello — I'm Carlo, and I'll be your tutor.
I've been teaching English for over fifteen years, in the UK, Spain, Ecuador, Mexico, China and online. I've taught students from age five to adults, and I can say honestly that the thing I enjoy most is watching someone realise they can do something they thought they couldn't.
How I work
Every lesson starts with where you actually are, not where a textbook says you should be. In our first session I'll ask you what you're finding hard, what you've already tried, and what you want to be able to do by the end of our time together. Then I'll build a plan around that.
My lessons are structured but never rigid. We'll usually work through three things:
A skill we're building — for example, writing a clear paragraph, analysing a text, or speaking more confidently
Practice with feedback — you'll do the work in the lesson, not just watch me do it
A small next step — something specific to try before we meet again
I explain things in plain language and I don't move on until something makes sense. If you don't understand, that's my job to fix, not yours to hide. I'll never make you feel stupid for asking a question — asking questions is exactly what I want from you.
What you can expect from me
Patience. We'll go at the pace you need, and I'll explain something as many times as it takes.
Honesty. I'll tell you clearly what's going well and what needs work. You'll always know where you stand.
Preparation. I plan every lesson properly and I remember what we covered last time. You won't have to repeat yourself.
Encouragement that is real. I won't praise work that isn't your best, because you'd see through it. When I tell you you've improved, it will be because you genuinely have.
Reliability. If we've agreed a time, I'll be there, ready.
What I'll ask from you
Have a go, even when you're not sure. Mistakes are how learning happens — I'd rather you try and get it wrong than stay quiet and get it right.
Tell me when something isn't working. If a lesson feels too easy, too hard, or just boring, say so. I'll change it.
A little effort between lessons. Even ten minutes makes a difference.
One last thing
I'm a writer myself — I've had poetry published — and I genuinely love language. I know that not everyone feels that way at first. But I promise you this: English is a skill, not a talent. Nobody is born good at it. I
