We all like to talk about the things we like.

To encourage students to speak with more confidence, I prefer to find topics for teaching that interests the students. It not only assists in teaching, it builds a connection with the students on a more personal level. At the same time it encourages me, as the teacher, to learn more about topics I might not have know about.

It is important to teach grammar and spelling, but it is ultimately the goal of most students to speak a language. Depending on the proficiency level, I have found in the past, that students often have the understanding to speak, but lacks confidence. Therefore I allow students more time to answer and not give them the answer too soon or by not interrupting too often. This can be done afterwards.

All the tools we use in teaching; reading, writing, spelling and listening are to enable students to broaden their vocabulary. An enhanced vocabulary enables students to express themselves better. Correct use of grammar follows an increased vocabulary, which then results in speaking more confidently.

As a teacher, I like to use social media, music, visual aids, radio, apps , games and movies with students and encouraged them to use it on their own to develop their language skills.

Ultimately, lessons have to be fun for the student and the teacher. The energy gained during the lesson interaction, guides the success and progress made together.
