Giovanni Neri was born in Bologna (Italy) in 1945. After classical studies (he got “maturità
classica” an equivalent of A level in Latin, Greek, History and Literature in 1964 ) he graduated in
Piano in 1965 with hons 10/10, and received his MSc.Degree (Electronic Engineering) from the
University of Bologna, Italy, in 1969 with Hons (100/100). From 1969 to 1973 he held a
postdoctoral studentship...
Giovanni Neri was born in Bologna (Italy) in 1945. After classical studies (he got “maturità
classica” an equivalent of A level in Latin, Greek, History and Literature in 1964 ) he graduated in
Piano in 1965 with hons 10/10, and received his MSc.Degree (Electronic Engineering) from the
University of Bologna, Italy, in 1969 with Hons (100/100). From 1969 to 1973 he held a
postdoctoral studentship of Centro Calcoli e Servomeccanismi of the Engineering Faculty of
Bologna. From 1973 he held various academic positions at the University of Bologna: from 1973
lecturer in logical networks, associate professor from 1980 to 1987 and full professor in
electronic computers since 1987. In the period he was several times visiting professor at
the University of Westminster in London where he taught electronic computers at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels: altogether he spent about two years in UK. He is currently Full Professor in
Electronic Computers ( at the Dipartimento diIngegneria dell’Energia
Elettrica e dell’Informazione “Guglielmo Marconi” of the University of Bologna (DEI), Italy. He
presently teaches a course in Computer Architecture for postgraduate students and a course on
Integrated Logical Networks to undergraduate students. He is author of many scientific
publications.
His research interests are mainly directed to the fields of parallel computing, computer
architecture and image processing. He has a large experience in designing the hardware of
microprocessor based and integrated systems. Among his achievements the design of RVR systems
for airports, many meteorological low power systems, control systems etc.
From 1980 he held different research and engineering positions: team leader of the Progetto
Finalizzato Informatica (Informatics) of CNR and from 1988 to 1993 team leader of the Progetto
Finalizzato Robotica (Robotics) in the same CNR. He was often elected president and member
of various academic commissions: doctoral, researchers, associate and full professors.
Giovanni Neri has been always deeply involved in digital design, research and
development. His applied works consists of a long list of various industry engagements among
which:
• From 1972 to 1977 at SIAP SpA as a consultant and designer for electronic project
in the area of meteorological and airport devices
• In 1983 he founded the engineering society Boconsult SpA of Bologna which
implemented microprocessor based control systems. which he managed until 1994
• In the second half of 80s he held the position of Scientific Coordinator o a
convention between the Department of Electronics Informatics and Systems,
University of Bologna and the Bologna Province and had an active role in the

successful design and implementation of an informatics system for professional
courses.
• From 1995 to 1996 he was the technical and administrative coordinator in charge for
the society MechEl SrL, Villanova (BO), which developed and manufactured
environmental and meteorological systems ISO 9002 certified.
• In 1996 he was appointed director of the pilot project Mobilita' e Trasporti (urban
traffic and transport) of the Province of Bologna and financed by the Public
Transport Department. The project developed a sophisticated decisional and
scheduling system for the transport in the city area.
• From 1997 to 1998 he was the scientific and technical coordinator of another
important project: centralised traffic light signalling of the Bologna city that includes
the control and optimisation of 200 traffic-light signalled intersections.
• In 1999 he was Project Manager of GILDA project, funded by EC, aiming to
develop an informatics infrastructure for goods transport along the Adriatic corridor
• In 2000 he founded and was chairman until 2007 of Unimatica SpA (40% of the
shares were owned Bologna University): the company develops systems based on
electronic signature for academic and bank applications
• He is presently scientific coordinator of a major project for general traffic control in
Bologna
In recent years he was deeply involved in University management.
He is also very active in music performances: very often he has accompanied a soprano in
series of concerts of german Lieder.
He speaks and writes fluently French, English and German.
His main interests (besides music) in the free time are mountain climbing, skiing, literature
and theatre.
