I have been teaching English for over 10 years, and for the past several years I have worked almost exclusively with adults. My clients are mainly employees of international corporations, (IT, finance, insurance, sales etc.) so we focus primarily on Business English. At the same time, we also work on general English so that they can feel more comfortable in everyday conversations – after all, people don't talk exclusively about work in the office. I place a strong emphasis on creating a positive atmosphere and helping students overcome their fear of speaking. I encourage my students to express themselves because my primary language-learning goal is effective communication. Grammar and pronunciation errors can be worked on along the way. Depending on the arrangements with the organisation or individual student, I usually use the inverted classroom approach so that we do not spend valuable class time on longer reading tasks or videos/listening activities lasting more than 3–4 minutes. The main focus of my classes is vocabulary acquisition and conversation. I do not want lessons to consist of going through one textbook exercise after another, as most people tend to associate that with rather traumatic memories of school. There are, however, students – usually people in more senior positions within a company – who make it clear that they simply do not have time to study at home. In such cases, we naturally do videos or listening activities during the class, but I try to choose relatively short formats. I also encourage students to practise vocabulary on Quizlet, as something is better than nothing. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have worked online about 90% of the time, usually via Microsoft Teams and Google Meet, although I have also used Whereby, Zoom and WhatsApp.
