Determination of hydrochloric acid and acetic acid in a mixture
by potentiometric titration method
Technique: Potentiometry
Purpose of exercise: The aim of the exercise is to determine the amount of strong and weak acid
in the mixture by potentiometric titration.
Chemicals
• Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 0.1 M solution
• Acetic acid (CH3COOH), 0.1 M solution
• Hydrochloric acid (HCl), 0.1 M solution
Equipment
• Flask: vol. 50 ml; pipets: vol. 5 ml and 10 ml
• Microtitrator CerkoLab
• Combined glass electrode
Determination of CH3COOH and HCl:
1. Into a flask with a capacity of 50 ml, with previously placed with acetic acid and/or hydrochloric
acid by supervisor, pour distilled water to the mark.
2. Pour exactly 10 ml of solution of analyte into the measuring cell. Put in combined glass
electrode. Turn on the magnetic stirrer.
3. The syringe of the titrator have to be filled with NaOH solution (twice fill and empty syringe with
titrant for washing).
4. Set titrator for a pause of 10 seconds, The volume of titrant step for 0.02 ml and a number of
steps for 250. Then perform the titration (twice). After finishing your measurements rinse 10-fold
titrator’s syringe .
Elaboration of the results:
1. Plot the titration curve and determine the endpoints using the two methods given by the
supervisor.
2. Calculate the mass of hydrochloric acid and acetic acid in the test sample solution
