Memento mori. La simbologia del teschio nell'arte - The skull symbolism from Middle ages to Baroque

MEMENTO MORI

Memento Mori is a Latin word that litterally means: remember you have to die. The phrase passed from the antique pagan world to the Christian one and was often used to remind people the caducity of life. The symbol of the skull and the crossed bones were often used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods to embellish marble tombs located in churches. During the Baroque time period many still life paintings are related to the concept of Vanitas (vanity) and painters often represent a skull accompanied by symbols of beauty and caducity, like flowers, art works and coins. Most of the time all these objects are accompanied by a sand clock, also representing our short time on this earth.
