Ecco degli esempi con la Famiglia Addams che tutte le generazioni conoscono. In questa lezione di inglese, impariamo contemporaneamente le relazioni familiari e ad usare il genitivo nel suo uso per l'appartenenza familiare.
Il genitivo si usa al posto del 'di' italiano invertendo l'ordine che si userebbe in Italiano, togliendo l'articolo e aggiungendo 's.
Per esempio: la mamma di Morticia -> Morticia's mother.
Testo
Gomez and Morticia Addams are a couple, they are married, they are husband and wife.
They have two children (bambini: plurale irregolare di child): Pugsley is their son, and Wednesday is their daughter.
Morticia has a sister, her name is Ophelia and Gomez is apparently an only child: he has no brothers or sisters.
Hester is Morticia's mother, she is Wednesday and Pugsley's grandmother and Gomez's mother in law. Gomez's mother is Grand-Mama who is also Wednesday and Pugley's granny.
Two curious siblings live with them: Uncle Fenster, Hester's brother who is bald and cousin Itt, completely covered with hair.

Utilizza i pronomi possessivi (his/her/their) per descrivere le relazioni tra gli Addams.

- Her: suo/a di lei
- Their: loro
Attenzione! L'uso è diverso dall'italiano. Noi scriviamo sua moglie perché sua al femminile si accorda con moglie che è un sostantivo femminile. In inglese il pronome possessivo si riferisce al detentore della relazione, in questo caso il marito e significa letteralmente "sua di lui": his wife.
Un modo divertente per non sbagliare mai i pronomi possessivi è farsi una domanda che abbiamo visto fare mille volte nei film girati al sud dalle comari del paese: "a chi sei figlio tu?", se la risposta fosse "a lui" usereste his, se fosse "a lei" usereste her, se fosse "a loro" usereste their. Basta sostituire figlio con qualunque altra relazione familiare e otterrete subito il pronome che vi serve.
