Qual è la differenza tra have to e must?

Have to e must esprimono obbligo, ma di tipo diverso.

inoltre must è un verbo MODALE mentre have to è un full verb (normale).

Questo implica che:

have to si coniuga in tutte le forme e in tutti i tempi come to play. Esempio:

present continuous: I am having to study math for tomorrow

present perfect: I have had to go and buy milk.

I haven't had to buy milk, Dan bought it.

Past simple: I had to tell my friend the truth. Did you have to tell..?

must invece ha solo questo tempo, il presente, negli altri tempi è sostituito da have to. L'interrogativa è poco usata: Must you go...? La negativa è mustn't.

Must è sempre seguito dalla forma base del verbo.

SIGNIFICATO:

MUST indica obbligo, dovere secondo il punto di vista di chi parla. Possiamo dire che è soggettivo.

I must dye my hair. I am fed up with this blond.

MUSTN'T indica proibizione.

you mustn't smoke here.

HAVE TO indica dovere oggettivo, stabilito dalle realtà, da regole, leggi.

6-year-old children have to go to primary school

DON'T HAVE TO indica assenza di necessità: non è necessario che

I didn't have to buy the tickets. My friend already did.

FARE MOLTA ATTENZIONE alla profonda differenza tra DO NOT HAVE TO e MUSTN'T
